Support for loved ones
For partners, parents, family members, friends, or carers supporting someone with alcohol or other drug challenges who feel overwhelmed, unsure how to help, and afraid of making things worse.
It is designed for people who are carrying the emotional weight of someone else’s substance use and need clear, grounded support to navigate what comes next.
This support focuses on education, practical guidance, and emotional steadiness, rather than trying to fix, manage, or control the person using substances. The emphasis is on helping you understand what may be happening, respond with intention, and care for yourself while supporting someone else.
Sessions are booked as needed and are shaped around what you are dealing with at the time.
What happens in a session
During sessions, we may support you with:
Understanding addiction and how it affects behaviour, emotions, and decision-making
Making sense of what your loved one may be experiencing psychologically and emotionally
Learning how to communicate without escalating conflict, enabling use, or withdrawing completely
Identifying and holding healthy boundaries
Navigating guilt, fear, anger, grief, and burnout
Exploring how to respond during crises or emotionally charged situations
Supporting you to prioritise your own wellbeing and safety
Linking you with relevant services or referrals where appropriate
Support is practical, real-time, and responsive to what you are dealing with right now.
What this support offers
You will be supported by someone with lived experience of addiction and recovery who understands, firsthand, how substance use affects not only the person using, but the people around them.
This support draws on real-world experience and evidence-informed practice to help you better understand what your loved one may be going through, how addiction can shape behaviour, and what forms of support are more helpful than harmful.
Because this support is peer-based, it focuses on practical insight, education, and steady guidance rather than clinical assessment or treatment. Where appropriate, we can also help you explore other services or referrals that may be useful alongside this support.
This service is designed to sit alongside, not replace, professional or clinical care.
